[Infographic] Malaysians consume 74% salt than they need

High blood pressure is the highest risk factor attributing to 42.4% of total deaths in the country, which is not at all surprising as Malaysians consume 74% salt than they need.  The InterSalt Study of 1988 showed a positive relationship between salt intake and blood pressure, as sodium (which makes up salt) increases water retention, causing stress on the heart to increase the blood pressure.

In a food haven such as Malaysia, where 1 tablespoon of soy sauce in your favourite ‘kicap chicken’ becomes 18.4% of your recommended daily intake, it is all the more crucial that we become more distinguishing of what we eat. The Ministry of Health is tackling the issue by launching a sodium reduction plan that will run the gamut from campaigns to regulations.
